You can overlay the time, for example, as well as an icon showing the weather and temperature. Use Quick Gestures to pause or resume music, videos and other content—just look at Hub Max and raise your hand.

The “Ambient Display” function lets you play photos in slideshows while the frame is not being used. While you can navigate and swipe through the photos, that’s about all the functionality it offers. After you've done that, you should find that the shared gallery appears in the Google Home settings for your smart display, just as if it was an album created in that account. It's worth remembering that, by default, any person you share an album with will have the ability to add their own photos and videos to that gallery.

Google Photos Live Albums aren't just useful if you have a smart display. Rather than having to remember to manually organize any new uploads into a group folder, you can rely instead on Google Photos' AI to do the hard work. Even if you haven't set up a Live Album, Google offers a few smarter slideshow options. "Select family & friends" generates an automatically updating album of people regularly spotted in photos uploaded to Google Photos.

If you want to use the same list of people you chose above, then choose the Friends & Family album instead of the “Select family & friends” option. Go take a look at your handiwork and marvel how good your pictures look on this display. When you turn off the lights in the room, your Nest Hub will dim automatically and change to displaying the time instead.

You can also see the live feed from your door cam at any time with a voice command. Streamer with a voice command and group the Hub with other connected speakers for synced playback of your favorite song throughout your house. Now that we’re back in the Ambient Mode settings scroll down to find more settings options. Here you can turn on and off Weather, Time, and Personal Photo Data. The first two, Weather and Time, are self-explanatory. Personal Photo Data adds marking to the display that explains what album the photo came from and who it belongs to (if you’re sharing your Google Photos). If you want to view personal videos, you’d need to manually load them to YouTube and view them that way. This is not user-friendly, especially when compared to what digital photo frames like the Pix-Star can do (letting you send videos to your frame via mobile app or by USB/SD card). Google Photos is an easier way to share an entire library than iCloud Photos. If youre willing to let very high-resolution photos and videos be downsampled, you can store as much media as you like. The limit is 16 megapixels for images (roughly 4920 by 3264 pixels for a standard-ratio camera) and 1080p for video.

The slideshow will only play when the Hub goes to “Sleep” and the ambient display engages. You don’t have control over the frequency or play order of photos. There are some basic features like the ability to categorize photos according to the people in them – but this isn’t very consistent.
